Love the big bag, reminiscent of the original Furla bucket bags, the "it" bag of the mid-1990's... And for Luisa (StyleScout 2) the first birthday gift I ever gave her was a Furla bucket bag which looked great back then around Madison Av or downtown in SoHo but slightly over-dressed when she went school in Cambridge, MA, doing her graduate work in Digital Communication for the internet (now called the Web) before most homes generally had PC and mobile phones were just taking off in Europe...

Meanwhile, Furla and Style Bubble will be celebrating the success of the Candy Bag with an event at Furla�s London flagship store tonight at 7pm (221 Regent Street, W1 >>>)

The Candy Bag event, which I plan on attending, will be announcing the winners of contests published on Style Bubble and Park & Cube... and winning contestents attending will take their new Candy Bag home after the event... and hopefully they let me photograph them and you... If you are in the area tonight and can attend I would love to meet you at the event and take your photograph... Hope to see you there...

Inside The Mind of a Street Style Photographer....Interview with Lee Oliveira

All About Lee Oliveira....

Having worked in the fashion industry for many years Lee Oliveira decided to give it all up one day in exchange for a new life, living and breathing his passion...photography! Having very little experience and a lot of nerves, Oliveira embarked on a solo career taking street style snaps on the streets in Australia. Seven months down the line and Lee is doing really well, he has a successful blog and is being sponsored by Gloss Cosmetics in addition to taking the most amazing photographs of unique people and their style. Here is an interview I have done with him to enlighten you all about his work and to allow you to see what it is really like to be a street style photographer.

In your eyes, what is the difference between fashion and style?

Fashion is "what's in" at the moment.. called "trend".

Style identifies who you are as an individual.

What do you look for in someone when you photograph them?

I don't really expect anything specific... I just find it! That individual style and a personality to carry their look. I can never plan what I am going to photograph.

When I find the connection between me and that stylish, person I must photograph her/him.

How often do you spot someone who really inspires you with the way they dress?

It depends where I am at or where I go. But I would say almost everyday.

Ps. I do stare at people sometimes on the streets, very few of them feel uncomfortable.. (but I don't stalk..hahaha)

If you weren't a photographer, what would be your dream career?

Well, I have worked in fashion almost my whole life, but the photography kind of came to me naturally. I can't see myself doing anything different at the moment.

How do you approach someone you want to photograph?

Big smile on my face.. and a good "hello there" to start with!

What has been the most valuable thing you have learnt whilst building and promoting your blog?

Be yourself when you blog. It's much easier than trying to be someone else. I have used twitter a lot which I find has organically promoted my blog with what I tweet about. In turn, I have forged some valuable connections along the way.

What advice would you give someone trying to break into the industry?

Feel inspired every time you blog and expect to work long hours every day to build a good blog. The best feeling is when you see readers coming back to your blog because they enjoy your voice.

Do you think your personal style has changed due to becoming a street style photographer and being exposed to a wide range of styles?

My style is the same, clean and comfortable, But as you know in fashion we always find the next inspiration every six months. I don't really follow a trend if I don't love it.

Do you prefer film or digital?

When I became a photographer everything was digital but I still want to learn more photography in film.

Film is where everything began.

Did you find it hard to distinguish your photos from other street style photographers at first?

When I started my blog and photography I didn't know what direction I was going in. Now, I know exactly where I am at although I am still growing. I admire several street style photographers for having the courage to stop people on the streets and able to photograph them. There are many street style bloggers out there now. If you really want to shine you really need to have quality photographs and your own signature.

Who is your idol in the industry?

Bill Cunningham and Scott Schuman which I had the amazing pleasure not only to meet, but also able the photograph them when I was in New York for FW11.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years time?

Oh.. trick question...10 years ago I didn't know I would even think about becoming a fashion photographer.

I would leave my destiny to speak up for me.

Designer in the Spotlight: Faye Fraser

From Faye's Off The Wall Collection which was inspired by the Berlin streets with their graffitti. The clothes are made from a mixture of wool and Lycra and are inspired by 80's sportswear.

Faye Louise Fraser, 22 from Northamptonshire is a woman of many talents. Currently living between South East London and Northamptonshire (where her workshop is based) she works part time in Berty and Gerty, a Camden vintage boutique, is part designer and part stylist. Working in the vintage boutique, Faye gets to meet alot of interesting people and it's also a form of inspiration for her design work; "I handle all different vintage styles and shapes of garments which feeds into my own garment ideas." Alongside this she is working on a couple of knit orientated projects, so there is never a dull moment!

Faye Fraser studied at Leicester Demontfort for an art and design foundation and then got onto the BA Honours in Textiles Fashion and Fibre course at Winchester School of Art from which she graduated last summer. From studying textiles and then specializing in Knitwear she came to develop her own style which was working with Lycra.

"Don't get me wrong I love the whole Eco-friendly thing and I try to up-cycle fabrics, incorporate vintage pieces within my work, use pure wool yarns that have not been heavily treated (apart from the Lycra of course); but I like to go against the norm and Lycra provided this 'abnormality' when it came to creating interesting fabric structures. This was also formed by my fascination of the rebellious couture designers such as Westwood, Mc Queen, Galliano (aside from his recent failings), JCDC, Muglar that have all saturated my research work ever since I studied design; with the combination of the newer 'it crowd' designers such as Henry Holland, Mark Fast, Gareth Pugh etc."

Though its not just the fashionista's that have led the way for her inspiration, music has played an enormous role, "I think music and fashion go hand in hand and I have been involved with electronic music (putting on club nights, seeing new DJ's basically immersing myself in my free time etc) for a long time". Along with this scene you meet so many other artistic people who then allow for even more creative scope (especially graphics and all forms of print- "I am quite the lover of graphic patterns!")

Did you always want to become a designer? If not what would be your ideal job?

I have always wanted to be a designer or what I thought a designer was, until I actually studied Fashion; and then I realized you can be a designer without making a collection every season and producing garments that are so conventionally wearable ( take Lady Gaga for instance)! I would say I am more of a visionary designer, an artist- I'm sure there are many terms for what I'm trying to say but I cant think. My ideal job would be to sit at a Dubied knitting machine all day everyday and produce interesting fabrics, also do a capsule collection every now and again; though I know for a fact this position does not exist on any graduate website believe me I've looked!

2. What does fashion mean to you and how has fashion shaped your life?

Ive been mesmerized by fashion since a very young age. I remember watching the clothes show with Carolyn Franklin and fantasizing that one day she'd be talking about me. I even used to make clothes for my barbie dolls and then use disposable cameras for fashion shoots (I still have the pictures). Though I never thought Id specialize in Knitwear until I arrived at WSA, I was always set on studying Fashion design; but I realized there was so much more scope with Knitwear it would allow my to be even more unique as I would be creating my own fabrics. It was also a challenge as before I started my degree I barely knew how to hand knit a cable! Having this interest and studying Knitwear changed my perspective on the arts, culture, and life in general! Art School was an eye opener for a small town girl (that sounds so American ha)

3. Which item of clothing do you wish people wore more often?

Anything Knitted of course!!! Ha I actually could not say a specific item of clothing but knitwear in general!it does not have to be a seasonal thing it can be all year round!

4. Who are your favourite designers or who do you aspire to be like?

Ive already mentioned some of my favourite designers above but the list does go on the classics Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent, Christian Dior . There are particular elements of designers that I love, I could never truly say I liked everything and anything that they had ever designed because everyone has their own individual tastes; but it is impossible to pin-point a ultimate favourite designer. I aspire to be like any of them who have stayed true to their original ethos of design like Vivienne Westwood or JCDC its not just about becoming a multimillionaire with your own label its being passionate about what you do truly believing in it.

5. Where is your favourite holiday destination in the world?

The Caribbean if I'm feeling in a lazy mood and Berlin if I want inspiration!!

6. If you could style any famous person, who would it be, what would they wear and why?

I would style Lady Gaga put her in a Marks and Spencer's twin set and pair of Clark's that would definitely be controversial ha ha, nooo but seriously ermm I

would have to say Agyness Deyn not that she needs restyling but I love her she is so interesting looking and Id go with a bit more of a colourful edge with her as she doesn't wear enough!

7.What are your views on the emerging 70's trend?
I absolutely love the emerging seventies trend but really its never gone away especially when summer roles round, there's been elements for years its just there's a huge emphasis on the wide leg trousers high waists, general glamour helped along by Marc Jacobs this season!

8. Why do you like designing and styling and what makes you design?

I can't say exactly why I like designing and styling without sounding like a stereotypical female, i.e I am a girl I like clothes etc etc. I just adore 'dress up' and love being able to change someones whole aura by dressing them, its amazing how you can mould someone into a complete alternate persona.

9. What piece of advice would you give someone trying to break into the industry?

My piece of advice which I am trying to follow myself at the moment is being persistence, pro active, productive. Keep applying for jobs/internships, keep creating new work, network as much as you can. Its not easy I am in this position as we speak but all you can do is try because if you don't try you'll never know and if it doesn't work there's always other routes!

Designer in the Spotlight: Faye Fraser

Faye Fraser, as well as being a successful and inspiring designer, is also a stylist. These photos featured above are part of a shoot by photographer Jenny Kendall, model Rui Liu, creative director Lauren Greyson and stylist Faye Fraser with the photographs shot at the Ministry of Fashion studios in London.

I love the attitude seeping out from the first photo with the distorted insect like arms and beady eye glasses. This photo is so so stunning and one of my favourite photos of the year so far. The cropped jumper with the twisted sleeves gives this preppy look a real edge in the second photo and really contrasts with the knee length kilt skirt. These photos really show the talent that Faye possesses which allows her to style almost anyone whilst also showing just how diverse her styling can be. Faye Fraser is one to watch for the future, not just for styling but for her designs also.

Vogue House London and Cond� Nast Worldwide News Store!!

After hearing Cond� Nast had opened a super hightech store selling all its publications from around the world, I had to indulge myself and check it out. Needless to say, I was not disappointed. Walking into this little oasis and escaping from the busy, noisy hustle and bustle of London streets, I was confronted by a wall to ceiling display of glossy, shiny and foreign magazines. Obviously they had all the British magazines there but they also had a huge array of magazines from all across the world all set out neatly on a white shelf and labelled with a flag to let you know what language the magazine was written in. As I study Spanish, I decided to buy Spanish Vogue and Spanish Cond� Nast Traveller Magazine but I was tempted by so many others there too and it was so interesting to compare the different styles of front covers. It's Not My Boyfriend's by Katie Corbin

After visiting Unravel 2011, a festival of knitting on the weekend, I came across the amazing artist and designer Katie Corbin. The knitted motorbike "It's Not My Boyfriend's" was made whilst Katie Corbin was still at university. Here is an artist profile of the artist herself:

Katie Corbin is mainly a painter but also works in all areas of Art using a range of materials. She began her formal training studying Fine Art at the University of Portsmouth (UK) and graduated in 2009. For her degree show, she bought a Chinese 125 motorbike from a scrap yard and covered it in wrapped and knitted wool. The idea for this developed after she was inspired by Yarn Bombing, Elaine Bradford and Christo and she began experimenting herself with wool. During an assessment, Corbin's tutor asked how she was going to develop her work and jokingly Corbin said "I might wrap a motorbike!" Having no knitting experience prior to this, she taught herself to knit using YouTube tutorials and because of this, the motorbike not only shows the process of wrapping but the improvement of her knitting. After deciding to base her project on gender and stereotypes, it was named 'It's Not My Boyfriend's' because people assumed that it wasn't hers, which is the point of gender stereotyping. Following her degree, she trained as an Art teacher whilst continuing to knit and learning how to master to crochet too. Currently, Katie Corbin is planning new projects involving wool so watch this space!!!

Ok, I don't know about you, but I really miss those long summer days where you could wear the shortest shorts and the skimpiest tops and you could feel the hot summer sun soaking you in it's rays. When you could sit outside and need your sunglasses because it was so bright and that sense of adventure you got when you set off on your much needed travels! Fashion DIY...Fossil Skirt

Here is a fashion DIY that I made a while back for a fashion design class I was taking. The project was based on Rhythms & Cycles so I decided to interpret the rock cycle and the creation of fossils. Here are some photos and some of my adapted imagery from the project. The skirt is really easy to make despite the complicated appearance.

Here are the instructions on how to make a fossil skirt:

SEWING PROCESS FOR FOSSIL SKIRT

You Will Need:

Enough white cotton to fit your measurements

1Waistband

1 large circle for the gathered front of the fossil

1 smaller circle just bigger than the size of the large circle when it has been gathered

2 pieces of fabric cut into the shape of the skirt

Interfacing cut to the same size as the waistband

1metre of black ribbon

1 large rectangle to make the bustle.

1 zip and 2 hooks and eyes

Grey dylon dye.

Stuffing

(All the measurements depend on the size you want your skirt)

Getting Started:

Once you have cut out all the shapes from your white cotton, you need to dye it using the instructions on the back of the dye packet. I found it good to do two circles at the smaller end of the skirt on the front and back then one the large circle making sure the lines are evenly spaced apart (these are going to be the lines you gather along). All the rest of the fabric you dye just plain grey.

FOSSIL

Mark quarters of both circles (on the right sides) with chalk.

With white cotton � do running stitch on both circles. Leave threads hanging.

With right sides together, pin two markers together. Do running stitch on big circle to the next marker. Pin those two markers together and draw thread up so that the big circle is the same size as the small circle. Secure the thread. Pin and tack the two matching sides together. Repeat this all the way round but only secure 3.5 quarters (for stuffing!). Sew around using machine.

Turn the right way round and pull the white threads to get them to the right size. Secure them.

Stuff the fossil.

Pin and tack the inner white circle and sew with zigzag to create quilted effect.

Repeat for the outer white circle.

Over-sew the opening by hand.

SKIRT

Pin, tack and sew the fossil to the front of skirt.

With right sides together, pin, tack and sew the side seams together.

Over-sew and tidy up the seams.

Pin, tack and sew the back seam up to the zip opening. Press this back seam to help with putting the zip in the right place.

Over-sew and tidy up the seams.

Pin, tack and sew the zip in (remember to overlap the skirt over the zip).

Pin and tack the interfacing to the wrong side of the waistband.

With right sides together - Pin the waistband to either side of the zip (remembering 5cm overlap at one end plus the 1.5cm seam allowances at both ends). Then pin mark the centre and sides on the waistband to match with the centre notch and side seams on the skirt.

Gather up the top of the skirt with running stitch. Do this in sections to each marker if it helps. Pull the gather to fit the waistband. Secure the thread. Pin and tack in place.

Sew the waistband to the gathered skirt.

Sew the ends of the waistband.

Turn over the fabric. Then pin, tack and sew the inside of the waistband to the skirt.

Sew the fastenings to the waistband.

Pin, tack and sew the hem.

Press the garment.

BUSTLE

With right sides together and with ribbon in place � pin, tack and sew one end and the long side together.

Turn the right side out.

Stuff with stuffing.

Finish by over sewing the open end.

Dinner With Audrey Hepburn...

As you may have seen in my post about things I love to read, I love the book "Audrey Hepburn, An Elegant Spirit". I was reading it last night and came across a recipe for one of her favourite dinners and I thought I would share it with you.

Spaghetti al Pomodoro

"Peel and dice the onion, 2 cloves of garlic, 2 carrots, 2 stalks of celery; chop and put in the pot. Add 2 large tins of Italian pelati, or prepeeled Roma tomatoes, and half a bunch of fresh basil, washed, leaves whole. Add a drizzle of virgin oil and simmer on low for 45 mins. Turn off the heat and let rest at least 15mins. Serve over 1 box of pasta cooked barely al dente (still a tiny bit of a snap at the core) with lots of fresh Parmesan (must be Reggiano) and the other half if the basil, well washed and cut with scissors in a cup or a glass to prevent bruising or blackening."

The book also mentions that Spaghetti al Pomodoro was Audrey's favourite dish and that she ate pasta once a day, eating Spaghetti al Pomodoro once a week. She finished her meals with just one piece of chocolate to chase away the blues.

It is such a great book and includes a few more recipes inside for you to try. I would recommend it to anyone who loves Audrey Hepburn.

Frida Kahlo-A Style Icon

After watching the stunning film "Frida" based upon the life of the legendary artist Frida Kahlo starring Selma Hayek, I was completely mesmerized by the passion, beauty and vividness of the whole thing. Not only did Kahlo lead a super crazy life, produce thought provoking art but she also surrounded herself with colour, something that we don't do enough of today. I thought I would share with you some of my Frida inspired pieces of jewellery and a video montage of the film itself. Fashion DIY: Every cloud has a silver lining...

This is a little fun fashion DIY that I am sharing with you today, it is a little cloud purse with a silver lining. It is very simple to make and looks super cute too. All you need is some white fun fur, the same amount of silver fabric, two stick on eyes, thick pink thread, a small square of felt in the colour of your choice, fabric glue, white thread, a sewing machine, scissors, a sewing needle and 15cm ribbon in the width and colour of your choice.

First cut out two matching cloud shapes in from the fur in the size you want making sure you allow 1.5cm seam allowance and then do the same in the silver fabric for your lining.

Pin and tack the silver fabric to the wrong side of the fun fur, adding in the ribbon to make the arms and then sew with the sewing machine using white thread.

Turn the cloud the right way around and then turn over the top to make a neat hem for the opening and sew with the machine.

Stick on the eyes to the face of the cloud and then sew a nose onto the face using the pink thread.

Cut out the hands from the felt and then using a needle and thread of the same colour sew the hands to the lengths of ribbon. NB: You will need to cut out 4 hand shapes to make the 2 hands.

You can also add an optional fastening to the opening of the bag for example a press fastener or velcro.

Now that the New Year has started and we have said goodbye to 2010 it is time to start focussing on our goals for the year ahead. This could be to drop a dress size or two or even give more to charity but why not set a goal which will brighten up your day to day life-Girls im talking replacing the boring old black tights for something bold, daring and dramatic. COLOURED TIGHTS!!

I want 2011 to be the year where a colour revolution took place and now is the perfect time to start. A new year, a new beginning...we are going to inject some colour into our drap winter wardrobes. I can see many of you shrinking away at this thought thinking "How on earth am I going to pull this style off??" Well the answer is simple.

When you are wearing something bold, a statment item, it is necessary that you tone down the rest of your outfit to avoid it being too busy. Try wearing some bright bold tights with a LBD and heels for the evening or a denim skirt in the day. The options are endless and the bright tights will boost your mood as well as anyone else's around you.

If you do not want to wear bold tights on their own or want to turn them into something more glamorous try layering them with a lacey pair of black tights over the top. You could even try sewing beads and sequins onto the lacey tights for some added glamour.

You must remember...have confidence in yourself and what you wear then you are 90% of the way to looking fabulous, the rest of it is up to the clothes.

Lets start a colour revolution in 2011...ditch the black tights for something more daring and live on the wild side. Who's on board???
